Just months after the completion of his acclaimed ‘i/o’ project, music visionary Peter Gabriel has announced his next studio album, titled o\i. Staying true to his celestial release schedule, Gabriel debuted the album's lead single, ‘Been Undone’, on January 3, 2026, to coincide with the first Full Moon of the year. The album was recorded between his legendary Real World Studios in Bath and The Beehive in London, marking a remarkably prolific period for the 75-year-old artist who famously spent decades between previous projects.
Gabriel describes the new body of work as the conceptual mirror to its predecessor, stating that while i/o focused on the "inside having a new way out", o\i explores the "outside having a new way in". The songwriter has indicated that this cycle will once again feature monthly lunar drops throughout 2026. This unconventional distribution method has proved highly successful for Gabriel, allowing each track to breathe and find its own audience in an era of rapid-fire digital consumption.
Peter Reflects on the Technological Horizon
The thematic core of o\i is deeply rooted in Gabriel’s long-standing fascination with the intersection of humanity and advanced technology. In a personal note accompanying the release, CLASH comments, he identified a "period of transition like no other", driven by the triple-threat of AI, quantum computing, and brain-computer interfaces. Gabriel views the role of the artist as a vital mirror in these uncertain times, using music to navigate the "mists" of the future and remind listeners of their fundamental connection to nature.
Several tracks on the upcoming record are part of Gabriel’s ongoing "Brain Project," a multi-year exploration into how music interacts with human neurology. Despite these heavy conceptual themes, the artist emphasizes that the record is also filled with moments of joy and "shaking our booty." By blending high-concept philosophy with rhythmic accessibility, Gabriel continues to challenge the boundaries of the art-rock genre, proving that his creative engine is running at full throttle well into the mid-2020s.
